The Exit 8 has now made its way to Android devices, blending elements of a walking simulator with an eerie twist, all for a price of $3.99. Developed by Kotake Create and published by Playism, this game challenges players to navigate through a seemingly endless underground passageway reminiscent of a Japanese metro station.
A Creepy Walking Adventure
In The Exit 8, players find themselves caught in a looping corridor where everything from the tiles and lights to the posters and a solitary pedestrian repeats endlessly. The core gameplay revolves around spotting anomalies—such as a poster with a changed graphic, flickering lights, or even a river of blood instead of a floor. The challenge lies in noticing these subtle changes and reacting swiftly.
The rule is simple: if you see something odd, turn back; if not, keep moving forward. The objective is to successfully reach the eighth exit by correctly identifying and reacting to these anomalies eight times consecutively. Fail to do so, and you must start over.
The Exit 8 Lets You Soak in a Surreal, Unsettling Atmosphere
Drawing inspiration from the concept of liminal spaces and the Backrooms, The Exit 8's setting is modeled after real Japanese metro stations like Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station in Tokyo. The game immerses players in claustrophobic corridors and repetitive architecture, enhancing the surreal and unsettling atmosphere.
Players must engage deeply with their environment, constantly scanning for the smallest details that could indicate danger or a shift in reality. This need to question memory and perception makes each playthrough uniquely tense and engaging.
Initially released for PC in November 2023 after a nine-month development period, The Exit 8 garnered 1.4 million downloads worldwide on Steam. Now available on mobile, you can download it from the Google Play Store.
