The upcoming Borderlands film, directed by Eli Roth, is generating significant buzz, but early critical response paints a largely negative picture. Let's delve into the initial reactions and what moviegoers can anticipate.

A Critical Mauling, Despite Star Power

Early reviews for the Borderlands movie adaptation have been overwhelmingly harsh. Critics, following the film's early US screenings, have voiced their concerns across social media platforms. Common criticisms include weak humor, unconvincing CGI, and a lackluster script.

Edgar Ortega of Loud and Clear Reviews tweeted, "Borderlands feels like what a disconnected executive thinks is 'cool.' No genuine character moments, just stale, obnoxious quips. It's not even 'so bad it's good,' just a mess."

Darren Movie Reviews from Movie Scene Canada called it "a baffling video game adaptation," praising the potential for world-building, but criticizing the "rushed and dull screenplay" and the "cheap" look resulting from poor CGI.

Despite the overwhelmingly negative reception, a few critics found some redeeming qualities. Film critic Kurt Morrison noted, "Blanchett and Hart are having fun and prevent a complete disaster," though he added, "it'll be surprising if this finds an audience." The Hollywood Handle offered a slightly more positive perspective: "Borderlands is a fun PG-13 action movie. It relies heavily on Cate Blanchett's star power, and she delivers."

Despite a star-studded cast, announced in 2020 following a period of inactivity, the Borderlands movie adaptation has faced skepticism from fans of the game franchise.

The film centers on Lilith (Cate Blanchett), returning to Pandora to locate Atlas's missing daughter. She teams up with a diverse group: Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and Claptrap (Jack Black).

As major film publications release their full reviews in the coming days, audiences will soon judge for themselves when Borderlands hits theaters on August 9th. In related news, Gearbox has hinted at a new Borderlands game.
