Civilization VII: A Deep Dive into Cross-Play and Cross-Progression
Sid Meier's Civilization VII marks a new era for the iconic turn-based strategy series, launching across major gaming platforms. This article clarifies the game's cross-play and cross-progression capabilities.
Cross-Play:
Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. Players require an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. While cross-play generally functions seamlessly across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, involving a Nintendo Switch player introduces restrictions. The Switch version has limitations on map size (cannot support standard or larger maps) and player counts (up to four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, six in the Modern Age). Therefore, cross-play sessions with a Switch participant will adhere to these lower limits.
Cross-Progression:
Unlike the nuanced cross-play, Civilization VII's cross-progression is straightforward. With an active 2K account, progress is synchronized across all linked platforms. This means players can seamlessly switch between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and other platforms without losing their progress. This feature, absent in Civilization VI at launch, reflects modern gaming preferences and is available from day one in Civilization VII.
Whether playing on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress will be consistently tracked. This marks a significant improvement over previous iterations.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
