Seven years after its initial release, Destiny's Tower social space has received an unexpected and unexplained update, featuring festive lights and decorations. This surprise, discovered by players on January 5th, has sparked speculation and excitement within the community.
The original Destiny, while still playable, largely faded into the background with the launch of Destiny 2 in 2017. While Bungie has consistently added legacy content to Destiny 2, including popular raids and exotic weapons, this spontaneous update to the original game's Tower is entirely unannounced.
The decorations, reminiscent of past seasonal events like The Dawning, include Ghost-shaped lights. However, unlike previous events, there are no accompanying quests, messages, or snow. This lack of contextual information adds to the mystery surrounding the update.
A Forgotten Event?
The prevailing fan theory points to a cancelled event, tentatively titled "Days of the Dawning," originally planned for 2016. Reddit users, including Breshi, have compared unused assets from this scrapped event to the current decorations in the Tower, suggesting a possible connection. The theory posits that the decorations were scheduled for a future date, perhaps unintentionally, with the assumption that Destiny 1 would no longer be active by then.
As of this writing, Bungie has remained silent on the matter. The update's temporary nature is likely, given the transition to Destiny 2 in 2017, which saw all live events migrate to the sequel. Players are encouraged to log in and enjoy this unexpected treat before it's potentially removed.
