Nintendo Direct/Indie World Showcase Recap
As predicted by some industry insiders, Nintendo surprised us with a last-minute Nintendo Direct! The 40-minute presentation featured a Partner Showcase and an Indie World Showcase. While first-party titles and Switch successor news were absent, the stream offered plenty of exciting announcements from third-party developers. You can watch the full presentation above; a detailed summary of key highlights will be available tomorrow.
Reviews & Mini-Views
EGGCONSOLE Star Trader PC-8801mkIIsr ($6.49)

This untranslated EGGCONSOLE release presents a familiar dilemma: is the game enjoyable despite the language barrier? Star Trader blends Japanese adventure game elements with side-scrolling shooter stages, but neither aspect truly shines. The adventure sections boast appealing artwork, and the unique blend of genres is intriguing. Players interact with characters, undertake quests, and earn money to upgrade their ship, which is crucial for navigating the challenging shooting segments.
However, the shooting sections suffer from the PC-8801's limitations, resulting in choppy gameplay that's not particularly enjoyable even if the scrolling were smoother. The game's structure is unclear, with neither genre fully supporting the other. Ultimately, Star Trader is more curious than compelling. The heavy reliance on Japanese text in the adventure sections significantly impacts the experience for Western players, hindering both gameplay and narrative enjoyment. While some progress can be made through trial and error, a full appreciation is impossible without Japanese language skills. It's a fascinating historical artifact, but difficult to recommend wholeheartedly.

Crypt Custodian ($19.99)

This top-down action-adventure game stars Pluto, a recently deceased cat, who's banished from the afterlife and tasked with eternal cleaning duties. Explore, battle enemies with your broom, encounter quirky characters, defeat bosses, and upgrade your abilities. It's a familiar formula, but executed well. Fans of the genre should definitely check it out.
