Dragon Quest 12's Yuji Horii Details Ambitious Development Efforts

By SavannahNov 17,2025

Creator of the Dragon Quest series, Yuji Horii, has assured fans that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate has not been shelved.

Dragon Quest 12 was initially revealed during the franchise’s 35th-anniversary celebrations in 2021, marking the first all-new mainline entry since 2017’s Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Since then, updates have been scarce. The last major comment from Horii came in February, when he confirmed that the Square Enix team was “hard at work”, adding that game updates would be shared “gradually.”

He wasn’t joking. After that, news went completely quiet—until now. In a recent interview with Gamereactor, Horii reemerged to confirm that the project remains in development.

This logo, unveiled back in 2021, is the only official Dragon Quest 12 material available so far.

“Yes, I really can’t share any new details—and I apologize for that,” he explained. “I’m deeply committed to this project, pouring my energy into it… All I can say for now is that the next title is shaping up to be something special. I’m giving it my all, so please stay tuned. That’s all I can share at this time.”

While a trailer or even a few screenshots would be more reassuring, fans can at least breathe easier knowing the game hasn’t been canceled—especially amid Square Enix’s internal restructuring and long stretches with no news.

In May 2024, Horii honored the passing of Dragon Quest artist Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. By that time, Yu Miyake, the series’ lead producer, had already transitioned to overseeing Square Enix’s mobile gaming division.
