The Vagabond and Wretch emerge as the top two starting classes, though compelling arguments exist for others. Each class possesses unique strengths, detailed below.
10. Bandit
The bottom three classes are largely interchangeable, but the Bandit stands out negatively. Its low starting level (5) and primary reliance on Dexterity (a relatively weak stat) coupled with subpar equipment make it an undesirable choice.
9. Confessor
Confessors offer limited advantages. Faith is a challenging stat to develop early on, and the initial equipment doesn't significantly enhance early-game Faith builds.
8. Prisoner
Similar to the Bandit, the Prisoner is an inferior version of other Dexterity/Intelligence builds. Its fragility and less-than-ideal starting weapons make it a less attractive option.
7. Warrior
Among Dexterity-focused classes, the Warrior isn't terrible, starting with two swords. However, superior Dexterity options exist. While possessing the highest base Dexterity, it falls short due to its gear. Still, it surpasses the preceding three.
6. Prophet
Faith-based classes present initial challenges. The Prophet, however, is the most viable choice in this category. Its spells are decent, but its equipment lags behind others. With strategic weapon acquisition, it can prove effective.

5. Hero
The top four classes are significantly superior. The Hero boasts advantages: a Battle Axe, 16 Strength, and a useful Ash of War. However, low Dexterity hinders meeting minimum stat requirements, and a better Strength-based option exists.
4. Samurai
This is Elden Ring's best essential Dexterity class. Its armor and starting weapon, the Uchigatana, are exceptional. The Uchigatana offers excellent scaling, impressive damage, and effective bleed.
3. Astrologer
Players favoring mage builds or Intelligence should choose the Astrologer. Its early-game spellcasting capabilities are unmatched, starting with 16 Intelligence at level 6. Its equipment is also well-suited for this playstyle. It also transitions well to Strength/Intelligence builds.
2. Wretch
The Wretch begins at level one with 10 points in each stat and a decent club with a strong Ash of War. However, its lack of armor and low level create a challenging start for newcomers. It's less effective for players committed to a single stat build but excels for those intending to respec or create a customized build.
1. Vagabond
The Vagabond is the optimal starting class, regardless of experience level. Its stat distribution is ideal for early-game builds, and its weapon and armor are high-quality. Its stat spread allows for easy respeccing or adaptation to different builds.
For a strong starting class, the Vagabond is the clear choice.
Does Your Starting Class Matter in Elden Ring?
Unless you're focused on highly optimized builds, your starting class has minimal long-term impact. While a class like the Bandit might present early difficulties, you'll eventually allocate points to your desired stats, achieving your intended build. The difference between starting classes is usually only a few stat points.
Min-maxing isn't crucial, even in PvP. While an optimized build offers a slight advantage, it's negligible except against top-tier PvP players. Choose a class that aesthetically appeals to you.
What Is the Easiest Class for Beginners?
For newcomers, the Vagabond is recommended. Its straightforward melee combat facilitates learning Elden Ring's mechanics.
Elden Ring is available now on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
