Ex-Annapurna Devs Launch Their Own Division

Executive Summary

Following a breakdown in negotiations with Annapurna Pictures CEO Megan Ellison, the majority of Annapurna Interactive's staff departed in September 2024. Subsequently, these former employees have acquired operational control of Private Division, a studio previously owned by Take-Two Interactive.

Private Division, sold by Take-Two in November 2024, saw significant layoffs following the sale. The acquiring entity, reportedly Austin-based Haveli Investments, has partnered with the ex-Annapurna team to manage Private Division's existing portfolio. This includes titles like the anticipated Tales of the Shire (March 2025 release), the ongoing Kerbal Space Program, and an unannounced project from Game Freak.

Private Division's Uncertain Future Reflects Industry Instability

The Annapurna Interactive staff exodus, occurring in September 2024, followed failed negotiations. While Haveli's acquisition retained approximately twenty Private Division employees, further layoffs are expected to integrate the Annapurna team. The new entity's name, long-term strategy, and plans for new IP remain undisclosed.

This merger underscores the volatile state of the gaming industry. Recent years have witnessed widespread layoffs and studio closures, reflecting investor apprehension toward high-risk, large-scale projects. The integration of two groups of displaced gaming professionals symbolizes this challenging climate.
