Final Fantasy IX Celebrates 25th Anniversary This Year
25th Anniversary Website Launch
Square Enix has unveiled a special anniversary portal teasing "various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations." The site currently showcases collectible figures, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtracks, and illustrated storybooks.
The publisher promises additional announcements leading up to the July anniversary. Originally launched on PlayStation July 7, 2000, FFIX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The title received HD remasters across mobile platforms (2016), PS4 (2017), and Nintendo Switch/Xbox One/Windows 10 (2019).
Remake Rumors Resurface Alongside Dormant Anime Project
Following Final Fantasy VII Remake's success, renewed speculation surrounds FFIX's potential remake prospects. While unconfirmed, FFIX's enduring popularity - evidenced by its #4 ranking in NHK's 2019 FF franchise poll - makes it a strong candidate.
The anniversary portal makes no explicit remake commitments, keeping fans guessing. Meanwhile, discussion has revived surrounding FFIX's announced-but-dormant anime adaptation. Revealed in 2021 as "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the series would have explored Vivi's descendants post-game.
French studio Cyber Group previously secured rights before filing bankruptcy in October 2024. Multiple parties including United Smile and Newen Studios have expressed interest in continuing production.
