Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage, Likely Due to Power Failure
A significant server outage impacting all four North American data centers of Final Fantasy XIV occurred on January 5th, shortly after 8:00 PM Eastern Time. While the game has faced numerous Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks throughout 2024, evidence suggests this outage stemmed from a different source: a local power failure.
Reports from players on social media and the r/ffxiv subreddit point to a power transformer explosion in the Sacramento area, where the NA data centers are located. The loud bang reported by users aligns with accounts of a blown transformer, resulting in a power outage that affected the game's servers. Service was restored approximately one hour after the initial disruption. Square Enix acknowledged the issue via the Lodestone and confirmed an ongoing investigation.
The fact that European, Japanese, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected strengthens the theory of a localized power problem rather than a widespread attack. The restoration of service was gradual, with Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers returning online before Dynamis.
This latest incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Final Fantasy XIV's infrastructure. Despite the game's ambitious plans for 2025, including the anticipated launch of a mobile version, server stability continues to be a key concern. The long-term impact of these recurring issues remains to be seen.
