"GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition Released by Modders Amid Take-Two's Takedown Efforts"

A Russian modding group, known as Revolution Team, has launched its ambitious 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' mod despite facing YouTube takedowns from Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games. This mod brings the world, cutscenes, and missions of the 2002 classic, Vice City, into the 2008 game, GTA 4.

In a statement, the modders expressed frustration over Take-Two's actions, claiming the company deleted their YouTube channel without prior warning or communication. The channel was a significant platform for them, hosting hundreds of hours of streams and development updates. A teaser trailer for the mod quickly garnered over 100,000 views and 1,500 comments, underscoring the community's interest and engagement.

The modders described the channel's removal as a "cruel move" and acknowledged the emotional toll it took on their team, particularly as they had envisioned a different, more celebratory release. Despite these challenges, they successfully released the mod on the promised date, though they remain uncertain about its future availability due to potential further actions by Take-Two.

Originally, the mod was intended to require a legitimate copy of GTA 4 as a gesture of respect to the game's publisher. However, due to the current uncertainties, it was released as a standalone package to ensure stable performance for a broader audience.

Revolution Team emphasized that their project is a non-commercial endeavor created by fans for fans. They expressed disappointment in Take-Two's stance against modding initiatives that could rejuvenate interest in iconic games, hoping their project might set a precedent for the modding community.

Take-Two has a history of targeting mods related to Rockstar titles, which has strained its relationship with modders. The company has previously taken down various mods, including an AI-powered GTA 5 story mode mod and a VR mod for Red Dead Redemption 2. Interestingly, Take-Two has occasionally hired modders it has targeted, and some mods have been followed by official remasters from Rockstar.

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games technical director, defended Take-Two's actions, stating that the company is protecting its business interests. He noted that the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' mod competes with the Definitive Edition, and similar projects could impact potential remasters.

The future of the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' mod remains uncertain, as Take-Two may attempt to remove it entirely.
