Since the highly successful launch of Marvel Rivals in December, players have been using mods to craft custom skins, despite warnings about potential account bans. Some of the most popular mods include transforming Iron Man into Vegeta from Dragon Ball, Mantis into a goth character, and even turning Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from Chainsaw Man. However, with the release of Season 1 and the introduction of the Fantastic Four, Marvel Rivals implemented a new mod restriction through asset hash checking.
NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, has made it clear that the game's terms and conditions strictly prohibit the use of mods, cheats, bots, hacks, or any unauthorized third-party software. In a statement to IGN, NetEase reiterated their stance: "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned." Despite these warnings, some players continue to use mods, risking their accounts.
A workaround for the new restrictions has been discovered and is now widely shared online. Although it requires more steps than before, it remains accessible for most PC players. Modder Prafit, who shared their workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users: "Use at your own risk." Prafit explained, "By using this you are actually circumventing a system that was created to stop us from modding on the Season 1 patch start. No-one knows if NetEase will ban you, but they have never issued permabans as far as we know."
Following the addition of the Fantastic Four characters, new mods have emerged. For instance, Ercuallo's mod transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from the manga One Piece, and it has already been downloaded over 5,000 times in just two days since its release, according to Nexus Mods statistics.

The ongoing use of mods raises the question of whether NetEase will follow through with bans as threatened. So far, no confirmed cases of players being banned for using mods have surfaced, but the existence of workarounds might prompt further action from the developers.
NetEase's motivation to ban mods stems from several concerns. Mods could lead to lost revenue from skin sales, raise intellectual property issues, and potentially disrupt the game's balance and performance. Modder Prafit noted that their temporary workaround is best suited for those with high-performance PCs.
