Wyatt Russell, known for his role as U.S. Agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is determined to silence the skeptics of the upcoming Thunderbolts film. In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Russell expressed his and his co-stars' collective desire to defy any negative expectations surrounding the movie. He drew confidence from his background in ice hockey, suggesting it prepared him well for this challenge.
"We came to this as a group of people who were like, 'Let’s make this our own thing, let’s make it great and let’s make people put their foot in their mouths,'" Russell stated emphatically. He further added, "I have a little bit of an athletic background, so I was like, 'Yeah, I want to make you eat your words if you’re like, this movie’s going to blow, I don’t want to go see it.'"
Russell highlighted a unique aspect of Thunderbolts, noting that it isn't a "primed movie." Unlike the Avengers films, which benefited from origin stories of their characters, Thunderbolts features anti-heroes without prior standalone movies, presenting a different kind of challenge.
The ensemble cast of Thunderbolts includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Bob / Sentry / Void, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost, and Wyatt Russell reprising his role as John Walker / U.S. Agent.
"There are no characters in this film, really, that have their own stuff in the Marvel universe that much," Russell explained. He emphasized that Thunderbolts focuses on "misfit types," which adds to the film's unique appeal. Russell praised the challenge presented by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to director Jake Schreier and the cast, expressing enthusiasm for the project.
Russell also acknowledged the diverse career paths of his fellow actors, noting that many had established careers before joining the MCU. He mentioned his own journey through "weird TV shows," David Harbour's extensive Broadway experience, Sebastian Stan's varied roles outside of Marvel, and Florence Pugh's notable work in other projects.

Earlier this month, Sebastian Stan shared insights into his career struggles before becoming the Winter Soldier in the MCU. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Stan revealed he was on the brink of financial difficulty before receiving a crucial $65,000 in residuals from his role in the 2010 film Hot Tub Time Machine. This payment came at a critical time, just before he landed the role of James "Bucky" Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger alongside Chris Evans.
"I was actually struggling with work," Stan admitted. "I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from Hot Tub Time Machine."
Stan's portrayal of Bucky Barnes has been a cornerstone of the MCU, with appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, multiple Avengers films, and the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. He is set to reprise his role in the eagerly awaited Thunderbolts film next month. Additionally, Stan's name was featured in the cast reveal for Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday, indicating that Bucky and other Thunderbolts members, including John Walker, will continue to play significant roles in the MCU.
