One of the joys of managing a farm in *Stardew Valley* is the delightful variety of animals you can have roaming around, from livestock to beloved pets. When starting a new game in *Stardew Valley*, you get the option to adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farming adventure. Previously limited to one pet per save, the 1.6 update in early 2024 opened the door to adopting more pets. To unlock this feature, you must first max out the friendship level with your existing pet.

To increase your pet's friendship, ensure their water bowl is filled daily with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; you'll see a heart bubble appear above their head to confirm the interaction. You can monitor your pet's friendship progress in the "Animals" tab in your pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice about adopting more pets from her shop south of your farm. If you haven't adopted your first pet by the start of Year 2, you'll receive this notice automatically.

After selecting your new pets, visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to order Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential not only for providing water but also as a designated "home" for your pets. Neglecting to keep the bowls filled can lead to a decrease in friendship and, eventually, your pets running away. Each Pet Bowl costs 5,000g and requires 25 x Hardwood, which you can gather with a Copper Axe or better. It's advisable to have these bowls ready before bringing your new pets home to maintain their friendship levels from the start.
