MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

By ClaireFeb 24,2025

Player First Games has announced the impending closure of its platform fighter, MultiVersus, with Season 5 marking its final chapter. The game, launched May 28, 2024, will conclude its run on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. This decision, detailed in a blog post on the studio's website, signals the end of online support.

Season 5, commencing February 4th, will be the game's swan song. While online functionality will cease on May 30th, Player First Games assures players that offline access to all earned and purchased content will remain via local and training modes.

The MultiVersus team expressed gratitude for player support: “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Real-money transactions have already been discontinued, but Gleamium and character tokens can still be used to acquire in-game content until the May 30th shutdown. The game will also be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

MultiVersus' closure follows reports of its underperformance for Warner Bros. Discovery, resulting in a significant $100 million writedown, contributing to a larger $300 million writedown in the games sector. This financial setback, alongside the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad, contributed to a challenging year for the company.

Despite the game's closure, Season 5 promises a robust send-off. Alongside standard seasonal content, new playable characters, Lola Bunny (unlockable via daily calendar rewards) and Aquaman (available through the battle pass), will join the roster starting next week.
