A bold new era for Superman is on the way, courtesy of James Gunn. Alongside the Man of Steel comes Nathan Fillion’s take on Green Lantern—specifically Guy Gardner. The actor recently shared insights into his portrayal of the character, revealing that this version won’t be your typical heroic type. In fact, he's far from charming.
“He's a jerk!” Fillion told TV Guide in a recent interview. “What's important to know is, you don't have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment.”
Fillion also touched on how his version of Guy Gardner handles the pressure of being a superhero, especially when it comes to ego. “I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman,” the actor joked. “He can't!”
This upcoming *Superman* film marks the first chapter in James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, titled *Gods and Monsters*. It will set the stage for a completely rebooted cinematic lineup. However, the Green Lantern legacy isn’t limited to the big screen. HBO is currently developing its own series, *Lanterns*, exploring other members of the Green Lantern Corps. The show stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with plans to debut in 2026.
The film features David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Written and directed by James Gunn, *Superman* is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
