Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X
Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates a near-term launch.
The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new level. This new ESRB rating suggests a continuation of that trend, bringing the game to current-gen consoles. The timing of ESRB submissions often precedes official announcements by only a few months, hinting at a potentially swift release.
Interestingly, the ESRB listing doesn't include a PC version. However, the 2020 port included a Steam release, and the possibility of a PC version remains open. Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles also adds to the anticipation.
The ESRB's track record of accurately predicting game releases, as evidenced by their 2023 leak of Felix the Cat's re-release, further strengthens the credibility of this potential Doom 64 port.
Looking beyond Doom 64, fans can anticipate the release of Doom: The Dark Ages, rumored for a 2025 launch, potentially with an official date announcement in January. These re-releases of classic titles serve as an excellent prelude to the next installment in the long-running Doom franchise.
