Nintendo Switch 2 Boosts OG Game Performance

By ThomasNov 02,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 has arrived, confirming earlier reports of strong backward compatibility with original Switch games. However, Nintendo is actively developing enhanced Switch 2 Editions that offer more than just improved graphics and framerates.

What Games Are Playable on Switch 2?

Nintendo outlines three game categories for the Switch 2: Native Switch 2 titles (exclusive to the new system), backward-compatible Switch 1 games (playable directly from cartridge), and Switch 2 Edition titles (enhanced versions of Switch 1 games with new features). Nintendo Switch Online's classic game library remains accessible across NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance and GameCube titles.

What Features Do Switch 2 Edition Games Offer?

The Switch 2 Direct revealed significant upgrades for these enhanced versions. Super Mario Party Jamboree's Switch 2 Edition introduces Jamboree TV - new content utilizing Joy-Con 2 motion controls, the Switch 2 microphone, and optional USB-C camera accessory.

These editions offer higher resolution (up to 1440p in TV mode), improved frame rates, and often include additional content. For instance, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond supports multiple display modes including:

  • Quality Mode: 4K/60fps docked or 1080p/60fps handheld
  • Performance Mode: 1080p/120fps docked or 720p/120fps handheld

All modes feature HDR support.

Other highlights include new story content for Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Star-Crossed World expansion) and enhanced Nintendo Switch App integration for Zelda titles through the Zelda Notes service. Select games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A will primarily receive performance upgrades.

Switch 2 Edition Release Schedule

The console launches June 5, 2025 alongside Switch 2 Editions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Upcoming releases include:

  • Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV - July 24, 2025
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land Expansion - August 28, 2025

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A currently have 2025 release windows without specific dates.
