Switch 2 Joy-Cons Might Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Supply Chain Data
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unexpected feature: mouse functionality. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has already yielded numerous Switch 2 rumors.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" intended for "game console handles." This suggests the Joy-Cons might incorporate a mouse-like bottom.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These haven't been found in public databases, indicating potentially new components. The listed size (90 x 90mm) seems large enough to cover the entire back of each Joy-Con, possibly requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handhelds
While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement. The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for controller attachment, a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity offers further intrigue into potential Switch 2 design elements.
