Persona 5 Royal: Best Ways to Get EXP

Quick Links

In the world of Persona 5 Royal, leveling up is crucial to conquering the game's challenging battles and bosses. As an enhanced version of the original Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and adds over 20 hours of fresh content. This includes a new semester for the Phantom Thieves and revamped boss encounters. Staying ahead in levels is key to enjoying all the new gameplay without being bogged down by excessive grinding.

Updated on January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: While being over-leveled can simplify Persona 5 Royal, it's essential to match the levels of Palace Rulers, especially in a new game file. There are various strategies to streamline experience farming, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose in Mementos. Additionally, Joker can earn EXP for non-active Personas with the right passive skills. This guide has been refreshed to include a section on using the Insta-kill ability for rapid experience farming.

Accessories and The Moon Arcana

Mishima Yuuki's Confidant

In Persona 5 Royal, players can enhance their experience gain by equipping the Team Glasses accessory, available as a free DLC from the PlayStation Store. These glasses boost EXP by 15% in battles, but each character must have them equipped to benefit.

Since battles are limited to Joker and three other Phantom Thieves, those on the backline receive less EXP. By advancing the Moon Confidant (Yuuki Mishima) to Rank 3 and then to Rank 5, players can ensure backup members also gain EXP. Reaching Rank 10 with Mishima's Confidant allows backup members to earn the same EXP as the front liners.

To progress Mishima's Confidant, players should choose dialogue options that resonate with him and bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when spending time with him. In Persona 5 Royal, Mishima's Mementos Missions are linked to his Confidant, so neglecting these missions can hinder progress.

Mementos: Increase EXP Gain

Cognition of Mementos

Jose, a new character in Persona 5 Royal, plays a crucial role in optimizing your Mementos experience. Scattered throughout Mementos are "flowers" and "Stamp Stations" that players can collect and trade with Jose. These can be used to alter the Cognition of Mementos, offering options to boost EXP, Money Rewards, or Item Rewards specifically within Mementos. Increasing EXP gain to 110% costs 5 Stamps, while maxing it out at 200% requires 12 Stamps.

There are 165 Stamps in total, but to maximize EXP gain, players need 85 Stamps. Stamp Stations are often found in dead ends behind breakable walls on Mementos floors, and players may encounter Jose when transitioning to a new floor.

Fight the Reaper

What Level is the Reaper?

The Reaper, a formidable enemy in the Persona series, appears in Mementos if players linger too long on a floor. Signs of his approach include a red blinking screen, the sound of chains, and warnings from Morgana or Futaba.

Initially, defeating the Reaper is nearly impossible unless players are on a New Game+ file. He wields powerful -dyne tier spells and Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks. At level 85, his stats are exceptionally high, with Agility being the lowest at 75, yet still potent enough to outpace the Phantom Thieves.

Defeating the Reaper, however, yields massive experience and money, often resulting in a level up for all characters. It's advisable to challenge the Reaper at level 60 or higher, utilizing Defense-raising Support skills and Makarakarn to reflect his magic. For those with the Persona DLC, stacking Concentrate, Heat Riser, and Myriad Truths from Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro) can deliver devastating Almighty damage.

Defeat Treasure Demons

How to Summon Treasure Demons

Treasure Demons, unique Shadows in Persona 5 Royal, first appear in Madarame's Palace and can be encountered throughout the Metaverse. Unlike typical Shadows, they are harmless and tend to flee after a few turns.

Each type of Treasure Demon has specific Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities but is universally vulnerable to Almighty attacks. The most effective way to defeat them before they escape is by using Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, to knock them down and trigger an All-Out Attack. Alternatively, high-crit attacks like Morgana's Miracle Punch can be used if the Treasure Demon is not immune to Physical damage.

Treasure Demons are more likely to appear in Palaces with high security. Players can also use the Treasure Trap infiltration tool to boost encounters, crafted with 2x Silk Yarn, 3x Plant Balm, and 1x Cork Bark.

Use Persona with EXP Skills

How to Get Growth Passive Skill

In Persona 5 Royal, Personas not equipped by Joker at the end of a battle usually miss out on EXP. However, the Growth Passive Skill allows these inactive Personas to earn a portion of the battle's experience. There are three levels of Growth Skills:

  • Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter of EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 2: Persona gains half of EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 3: Persona gains full EXP when inactive.

Personas that learn Growth at specific levels include:

  • Growth 1: Saki Mitama (level 7), Koppa Tengu (level 12)
  • Growth 2: Lachesis (Innate), Kurama Tengu (level 36), Thoth (level 42), Ananta (level 47)
  • Growth 3: Izanagi (level 25), Izanagi Picaro (level 28), Narcissus (level 50), Raphael (level 81)

With the Electric Chair in the Velvet Room, players can convert Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro can be transformed into a Growth 3 Skill Card. Growth 1 Skill Cards are unavailable, while Growth 2 Skill Cards can be obtained by taking Caroline and Justine to Miura Beach between September 2nd and September 29th, after clearing event 6 (Sky Tower).

Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant

How to Unlock Insta-Kill

Insta-kill in Persona 5 Royal allows Joker to instantly defeat a Shadow during an ambush if his level is 10 or more levels higher than the Shadow's. This skill, available after reaching Rank 7 with Ryuji's Confidant, not only eliminates the Shadow but also grants items, yen, experience, and potentially a new Persona.

To identify Shadows vulnerable to Insta-kill, use Joker's Third Eye ability to spot those with a green outline. Ryuji's Confidant is one of the easiest to max out, requiring no specific Social Stats. To unlock Insta-kill swiftly, spend time with Ryuji and choose dialogue options that maximize your points, ideally before focusing on other Confidants.
