"Predator Movies: Chronological Viewing Guide"

By BellaMay 26,2025

Humans like to consider themselves the top of the food chain, but in the grand scheme of the galaxy, we're just barely holding our own in the cosmic gladiator competition. The Predator franchise, which kicked off with the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger film in 1987, introduces us to the Yautja—towering, trophy-seeking hunters from space who scour the universe for lethal sport and have been known to abduct species for hunts back on their home planet.

The initial two Predator films released in 1987 and 1990 set the stage for an enduring saga. Given that the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise pose another cinematic threat to humanity, it was a natural progression in the 2000s to merge these universes with two Alien vs. Predator films. In the following decade, directors like Robert Rodriguez, Shane Black, and Dan Trachtenberg each brought their unique vision to the franchise.

With two new Predator movies slated for release in 2025, now is the perfect time to dive into the original sci-fi classics. If you're eager to watch every Predator movie in order, we've compiled a comprehensive timeline and viewing guide. Below, you'll find details on how to watch the Predator movies in both chronological and release order, along with where to stream them online.

Predator Movies in (Chronological) Order

1. Prey (2022)

Prey serves as a prequel, intended to be viewed after the other films, particularly Predator 2. However, for a true chronological experience, start here. Set in 1719 on the Great Plains, Prey follows a young Comanche woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder), who faces more than she bargained for during a hunt with her brother, finding herself in the sights of a more primitive Predator. Determined to prove herself, Naru aims to take down the alien stalker in this fresh and thrilling addition to the three-decade saga.

2. Predator (1987)

The franchise began with the 1987 classic, Predator, directed by John McTiernan and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, and Shane Black (who later directed his own Predator film). This action-packed classic follows a nearly invincible military rescue team as they are outmatched by an invisible force in the jungles of South America. When the attacker is revealed as an alien hunter on a sinister safari, Schwarzenegger's Dutch must devise a strategy to defeat a technologically and tactically superior monster.

3. Predator 2 (1990)

A few years later, Predator 2 brought more action and chaos, but with a new cast and setting. Set during a heatwave and crimewave in 1997 Los Angeles, the film follows a team of cops, including Danny Glover, Bill Paxton, Ruben Blades, and María Conchita Alonso, as they navigate a bloody cartel war while also dealing with a Predator stalking the city for victims.

4. AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)

After a 14-year hiatus, the Predator returned with a bang in a crossover with the Alien franchise. Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, AVP: Alien vs. Predator was a hit, revitalizing both series. Set in present-day America, the film reveals a long history of Predators using Earth as a hunting ground, breeding humans to create Xenomorphs for their rites of passage. The cast includes Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henriksen, Raoul Bova, and Ewen Bremner.

5. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007)

The sequel to AVP, Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, continues the battle immediately after the first crossover. While not as successful, it introduced the "Predalien," a hybrid creature that attacks a small Colorado town, prompting a Predator "cleaner" to be sent to eliminate the threat.

6. Predators (2010)

The only Predator movie not set on Earth, Predators, directed by Robert Rodriguez, shifts the setting to a Yautja game reserve on a distant planet. Featuring a cast including Adrien Brody, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, and Alice Braga, the film reveals how humans, specifically "established killers," are abducted and used for sport between rival Yautja tribes. Though the exact Earth year is unclear, it can be assumed to be around 2010, fitting it into the chronological viewing order here.

7. The Predator (2018)

Eight years after Predators, Shane Black directed The Predator, returning to the franchise's roots. The film follows a squad of unstable soldiers, including Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, and Alfie Allen, as they confront two rampaging Predators and thwart their DNA-splicing schemes. The movie teases further adventures, with alternate endings featuring time-traveling versions of Alien's Ellen Ripley and Newt.
