Rambo is poised for a comeback, with a prequel in development from Jalmari Helander, the director behind Sisu and Big Game. As reported by Deadline, Millennium Media is currently introducing the film, titled John Rambo, at the Cannes market.
The Cannes market is an event held alongside the Cannes Film Festival, where upcoming film projects still in need of funding or distribution are presented to potential investors. Millennium Media, renowned for the Expendables and Has Fallen franchises, also produced 2008’s Rambo and 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood.
Details about the plot of John Rambo are scarce, but it is known to be set during the Vietnam War and will serve as a prequel to the iconic 1982 film, First Blood. Casting has not yet been finalized. According to Deadline, Sylvester Stallone, the original star, is aware of the project but is not currently involved.
The screenplay for John Rambo was written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (The Mauritanian, Black Adam), with filming scheduled to commence in Thailand this October.
While a Rambo prequel may come as a surprise, Helander’s 2023 WWII action film Sisu—which reimagined John Wick as an elderly Finnish commando unleashing havoc on retreating Nazis—demonstrates he is more than capable of the task.
