Understanding Legendary Sumi-E in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Legendary Sumi-E are unique animal paintings that Naoe or Yasuke can create in the wild. A painting icon appears on the compass and map when near a target. To complete a painting, crouch, approach stealthily, and hold L2/LT until the artwork is finished.
Unlike regular Sumi-E, legendary ones don’t appear on the map, making them trickier to locate. The game features five legendary Sumi-E, each available only during specific seasons.

Locations of All Legendary Sumi-E in Assassins Creed Shadows
Legendary Tanuki – Summer, Daytime
To find the Legendary Tanuki Sumi-E, travel to Omi during summer daytime. Head to Shimmering Fields, specifically Shigaraki Hamlet.
Upon arrival, look for Tanuki statues scattered around. Follow the upward path to a clearing where the legendary Tanuki roams. Approach slowly, stay low, and complete the painting with patience.
Legendary Grey Heron – Winter, Daytime
Find the Grey Heron in Wakasa at Lake Suigetsu during winter daytime. Head to the cluster of islands west of the lake. Since the terrain is flat, approach cautiously to avoid startling the bird.
Dismount at a distance, walk to the marked area, and locate the Sumi-E opportunity. Move slowly while crouching to get close enough to complete the painting.
Legendary Macaque – All Seasons, Nighttime
Travel to Yamashiro and locate Little Leaf Glade, near Sarumaru Shrine in the mountains. Wait for nighttime, then climb the shrine’s stairs to find the three wise monkeys. Approach quietly to sketch them undisturbed.
Legendary Silver Fox – Autumn, Nighttime
The Legendary Silver Fox Sumi-E appears at night in autumn in the Kii region, along the Nakahechi Route. Visit Kamimisu Inari Shrine, marked by fox statues. Spot the fox at the cliff’s edge, then approach stealthily to capture its image.
Legendary Deer – Spring, Nighttime
Journey to Yamato and head to Yoshino. The closest fast-travel point is Mountain Blossom Temple to the west. Follow the eastern path to reach Sakura Meadows.
Climb the slopes to a clearing where the legendary Deer awaits, ready for your Sumi-E collection.
If the animal doesn’t appear despite being in the correct location and time, fast-travel to a nearby spot and return. With persistence, you’ll complete your Sumi-E collection.
