Ryan Gosling in Star Wars Film by Deadpool & Wolverine Director

By JasonMay 26,2025

Director Shawn Levy, known for his work on *Deadpool & Wolverine*, may soon be venturing into the vast expanse of the Star Wars universe, and he's reportedly bringing Ryan Gosling along for the journey. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's Star Wars project has entered negotiations with Ryan Gosling to star in the upcoming film. Since 2022, Levy has been developing this movie, with scriptwriting efforts kicking off last year. He's teaming up once more with Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind *This Is Where I Leave You* and *The Adam Project*, both directed by Levy.

As expected, details about Levy's Star Wars movie are closely guarded. There's no information yet on the character Gosling might portray or the specific era within the Star Wars timeline the film will explore. What is known, however, is that the story will be distinct from the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also notes that this film is intended to be a standalone movie, not part of a trilogy.

Ryan Gosling's involvement has evidently accelerated the project. Originally, Levy was slated to direct a boy band movie featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that if Gosling officially signs on, production on the Star Wars film will be prioritized, becoming Levy's next endeavor, with filming scheduled to commence this fall.

Star Wars is currently navigating a period of transition. Following the cancellation of *The Acolyte*, Disney Plus introduced its latest series, *Skeleton Crew*, which recently concluded its run. On the film front, Dave Filoni's *The Mandalorian and Grogu* completed production in December and is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Additionally, a new trilogy centered around Daisy Ridley's character, Rey, from the sequel trilogy is in the works.

There's no confirmed release date yet for Levy's Star Wars movie should it proceed this year. For a comprehensive look at what's on the horizon for the Star Wars universe, be sure to check out our preview of *Star Wars in 2025*.
