PlayStation Unveils New AAA Studio in Los Angeles
Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a major, original IP for the PlayStation 5. The news was confirmed through a recent job posting for a Project Senior Producer.
The addition of this Los Angeles-based studio to PlayStation's already impressive roster of first-party developers – including Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games – has generated considerable excitement among fans. PlayStation's consistent acquisition of established studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years further fuels anticipation for upcoming titles.
The identity of the studio remains shrouded in mystery, but speculation points to two potential origins:
Theory 1: A Bungie Spin-off? Following Bungie layoffs in July 2024, a team was transferred to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team, potentially working on Bungie's "Gummybears" project, could be the core of the new Los Angeles studio.
Theory 2: The Jason Blundell Team? Veteran Call of Duty developer Jason Blundell, formerly co-founder of the now-defunct Deviation Games, is another strong contender. Deviation Games was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Significantly, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, under Blundell's leadership, suggesting a potential continuation of their previous project. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, this seems a more likely scenario.
While details remain scarce, and any official announcement could be years away, the confirmation of another first-party PlayStation studio working on a groundbreaking AAA title is welcome news for PlayStation fans.
