The June 2025 State of Play showcase set a new peak concurrent viewership record for Sony.
Sony launched the summer game reveal season with an impressive presentation, offering a wide variety of new games to build excitement ahead of Summer Game Fest week. Highlights included glimpses of 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Romeo is a Dead Man, and Silent Hill f.
Streams Charts reported that this week's State of Play reached a new series record, peaking at over 2.2 million concurrent live viewers. Based on the site's data, the State of Play now stands as the third most-watched gaming or tech showcase of 2025 in terms of peak viewership. Only two Nintendo Direct events attracted larger audiences—with Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal, understandably, taking the top spot by a significant margin.
As noted by Push Square, this State of Play wasn't Sony's most-viewed livestream ever—that title still belongs to the PS5 reveal event, which currently has 44 million views. The Horizon Forbidden West and Horizon Forbidden Dawn showcases were also extremely popular, accumulating 15 and 10 million views, respectively. However, Tuesday’s broadcast undeniably became the most-watched State of Play in history.
The showcase highlighted third-party titles—especially from Japanese developers—with major announcements from studios like Capcom, Grasshopper Manufacture, Konami, ArtPlay, Square Enix, and Team Ninja. The event featured surprisingly few first-party titles.
This year's summer presentation also seemed tailored toward dedicated gamers. There was a noticeable emphasis on action games, many of which are expected to carry mature or 18+ ratings.
