The Steam FPS title, Fortune's Run, faces an indefinite delay due to its sole developer, Dizzie, receiving a three-year prison sentence. This unexpected setback throws the game's early access release into limbo.
While delays in Steam game development are common, usually stemming from financial or technical issues, Fortune's Run's predicament is unique. The developer's incarceration halts all progress. Prior to this news, Fortune's Run enjoyed positive reception on Steam, praised for its nostalgic art style and gameplay, despite being in early access.
Dizzie, in a January 14th Steam update, revealed their three-year sentence, a consequence of a prior crime committed before the game's development. While the specific crime remains undisclosed, Dizzie acknowledged a violent past. This situation, though unusual for game development, highlights the unpredictable nature of the industry.
Originally a collaborative project, Fortune's Run now rests solely on Dizzie's shoulders after the departure of another team member following a medical complication and subsequent loss of interest in game development. With Dizzie's imprisonment commencing in February 2025, development is completely paused. The game's 2026 early access completion target is highly unlikely to be met. However, lengthy early access periods are not uncommon in the indie game sphere, with some titles taking five years or more.
Dizzie assures fans that the game's completion is still the goal upon release from prison. The current early access build remains playable, and players seeking similar titles can explore other excellent early access shooters available on Steam.
