Nexus Mods, a popular modding platform, finds itself at the center of a heated debate after removing over 500 user-created modifications for the game Marvel Rivals within a single month. The controversy ignited when mods replacing Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump were taken down.
Nexus Mods' owner, TheDarkOne, addressed the situation in a private Reddit discussion, clarifying that both mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. TheDarkOne stated, "We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason YouTube bloggers are silent about it."
However, the removal didn't quell the outrage. TheDarkOne revealed a subsequent barrage of online harassment, including death threats and accusations of pedophilia, directed at the platform following the controversy. TheDarkOne added, "Today we receive death threats, are called pedophiles and subjected to all sorts of insults simply because someone chose to escalate this issue."
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods' moderation policies have sparked controversy. A similar incident occurred in 2022, involving the removal of a Spider-Man Remastered mod that replaced rainbow flags with American flags. At the time, the platform publicly defended its decision, citing a commitment to inclusivity and the removal of content deemed discriminatory.
TheDarkOne concluded, "We refuse to engage with individuals who find this objectionable."
