D'Onofrio Talks Kingpin's Film Rights

By MichaelOct 23,2025

Our favorite Hell's Kitchen antagonist Wilson Fisk appears off-limits for Marvel films, as confirmed by Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D’Onofrio.

"The one downside I know about concerns character rights," D’Onofrio revealed during his Happy Sad Confused podcast appearance with Josh Horowitz. "Marvel faces legal complexities regarding my portrayal. Due to ownership issues, I'm only available for television appearances—not even standalone Fisk movies."

He elaborated: "The rights situation makes film crossover impossible right now. Whether this will change remains uncertain." This restriction seemingly prevents D’Onofrio's acclaimed Fisk from appearing in upcoming MCU projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day or Avengers: Doomsday. It also casts doubt on potential Daredevil films featuring Charlie Cox, where Fisk would naturally appear as the primary antagonist.

D’Onofrio originated his Emmy-worthy portrayal of NYC's crime lord/mayoral candidate in Netflix's Daredevil (2015-2018). His three-season performance established Kingpin as one of Marvel's most compelling villains, earning widespread acclaim. The actor approaches the role with remarkable intentionality, drawing inspiration from classic Hollywood performances.

"I studied how legends like Harrison Ford conveyed vulnerability during action sequences," D’Onofrio told IGN. "Their nervous energy made scenes feel authentic. Gary Cooper's humble intensity in Sergeant York particularly influenced me—that human element enhances action tremendously. Our entire cast maintains this philosophy."

Disney+ currently airs Daredevil: Born Again weekly, building toward its April 15, 2025 finale.
