Geralt of Rivia's return in The Witcher 4 has been confirmed by voice actor Doug Cockle, but the iconic Witcher won't be the protagonist this time around. While he'll feature in the game, the narrative focus shifts to new characters.
A New Protagonist for The Witcher 4
Cockle, in an interview with Fall Damage, clarified that Geralt's role will be supporting, not central. He stated, "Witcher 4 has been announced...Geralt will be part of the game, but the game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time." The new protagonist remains a mystery, even to Cockle himself. Speculation points towards several possibilities. A Cat School medallion, seen in an early Unreal Engine 5 teaser, suggests a survivor of that decimated Witcher School could be the lead. The Gwent card game also hints at vengeful Cat School remnants. Another strong contender is Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter, supported by her possession of a Cat medallion in the books and subtle hints in The Witcher 3.
Whether Ciri takes the reins with Geralt as a mentor figure, or his involvement is limited to flashbacks or cameos, remains to be seen.
Development of The Witcher 4: Polaris
Game director Sebastian Kalemba, in an interview with Lega Nerd, highlighted the game's dual aim: to attract new players while satisfying longtime fans. Development, under the codename "Polaris," began in 2023 and, according to CD Projekt Red, involves over 400 developers—making it their largest project yet. However, CEO Adam Kiciński previously suggested a release date at least three years out, given the ambitious scope and development of new Unreal Engine 5 technology.
