WoW Patch 11.1: Two New Races Revealed

Summary

  • World of Warcraft Patch 11.1 introduces Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races using Goblin jetpacks.
  • Undermine, the new zone in Patch 11.1, disables flying, instead utilizing customizable cars (D.R.I.V.E.) and jetpacks.
  • Skyrocket races present ring-collection challenges, emphasizing speed and skillful maneuvering.

World of Warcraft Patch 11.1, "Undermined," introduces two exciting new race types: Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races. These replace traditional Skyriding races in Undermine, the sprawling subterranean Goblin capital city. Undermine itself prohibits flying, encouraging players to utilize the D.R.I.V.E. system—a customizable, high-speed ground vehicle—in the Breakneck races.

The Skyrocket races, however, offer a unique aerial challenge. Instead of traditional mounts, players use Goblin jetpacks, navigating a thrilling course while collecting rings. This system blends aspects of traditional flying and Skyriding; players maintain momentum but cannot stop mid-air, creating a dynamic and challenging experience. Footage from the Public Test Realm (PTR) shows increased speed with each ring collected, but this also reduces turning responsiveness, adding a layer of strategic difficulty.

Undermine's no-fly zone eliminates Skyriding races. Both Breakneck and Skyrocket races feature achievements for completing each course with Bronze, Silver, and Gold times. Reverse versions of all races are also included, although advanced or challenge courses, unlike some Skyriding races, are absent.

Initial player feedback on the Skyrocket races is mixed. While some are enthusiastic, others find the jetpack controls stiff and unresponsive compared to Skyriding. However, with Patch 11.1 still under development, refinements are expected before the February release.
