Celebrated by Indians and Nepalis worldwide, the festival's origins trace back to Bihar.

Shiva possesses numerous names, including Viswanatha (lord of the universe), Mahadeva, Mahesha, Maheshvara, Shankara, Shambhu, Rudra, Hara, Trilochana, Devendra, Nīlakaṇtha, Subhankara, Trilokinatha, and Ghrneshwar. Meaning "The Auspicious One," Shiva is one of Hinduism's three major deities, the chief deity in Shaivism, and a primary form in the Smarta Tradition. He is considered "the Transformer."
