Application Description

EDR "Blackbox" Scanner & PDF Crash Reports for Investigators

VEHICLE COLLISION ANALYSIS

Pair the CrashScan App with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to access vehicle computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), or "blackbox," when compatible (see compatibility below). CrashScan enables investigators to detect, retrieve, and analyze stored crash data, aiding in validating insurance claims and identifying liability or suspicious collision claims.

VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY

(Event Data Recorder & Comprehensive Diagnostic Scan)

Supports over 3000 unique year/make/models worldwide, verifiable here:

DETAILED CRASH REPORTS

A successful CrashScan provides insights into impact severity, orientation (front/rear/side), and contextual details, including:

- crash severity: minor, moderate, or severe

- EDR activation thresholds

- 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake, accelerator, and steering

- occupant count and seatbelt status

- estimated repair costs (economic impact in $)

- likelihood of structural damage

- injury risk levels (whiplash, injury duration)

- g-forces in daily activities for comparison

*Injury risk calculations use stored acceleration data, scientific studies, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS)

EDR DATA PRIVACY LAWS

Canada: No specific legislation; EDR data is deemed diagnostic and "non-private," though insurers typically seek consent.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 restricts EDR data retrieval, designating it as property of the vehicle owner or lessee. Seventeen states—Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington—have laws requiring owner or policyholder consent for data access, with certain exceptions.
