AMD's Next-Gen Gaming CPUs Keep Prior Architecture

By ElijahFeb 14,2026

AMD has unveiled its next-generation Ryzen 8000 series processors for gaming laptops, spearheaded by the Ryzen 9 8945HX. Unlike the recently launched Ryzen AI 300 series laptop chips, however, these new CPUs are based on the previous-generation Zen 4 architecture.

The company is introducing four new processors for high-performance gaming laptops. The flagship Ryzen 9 8945HX boasts 16 cores, 32 threads, and boost speeds of up to 5.4GHz. At the more accessible end, AMD is rolling out the Ryzen 7 8745HX, featuring 8 cores, 16 threads, and a 5.1GHz boost clock. Interestingly, these specifications closely mirror their last-generation counterparts—for example, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX also offered 16 cores, a 5.4GHz boost clock, and 80MB of cache.

Nevertheless, these new processors are set to be paired with the fastest mobile GPUs in premium gaming laptops. Earlier this year, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile I tested encountered bottlenecks with a lower-power AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 CPU, despite its newer Zen 5 architecture. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 8945HX can be configured to operate between 55W and 75W, which should deliver a notable performance uplift—even if a Zen 5 chip with the same power envelope would have offered greater gains.

If you've been waiting for AMD's latest CPUs before purchasing a gaming laptop, these models will start appearing in high-end systems over the coming months. Below, I’ve broken down the detailed specifications for each new processor.
