Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal decision: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome.

Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?

This decision hinges on player preference. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to after a loss), the choice presents itself: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this grants the party an advantage against the Netherbrain, it might alienate players attached to these companions.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to potentially align with the Netherbrain. A party member might still transform into a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain alongside the Githyanki. He'll even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.

In short: choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; choose Orpheus to risk it but gain his aid. The Emperor's choice might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.

The Moral High Ground?

Morality is subjective, but this boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, as a Githyanki heir, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize self-preservation, even if it impacts the wider world.

The Emperor, however, is generally benevolent, aiming to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Choosing him might lead to a Mind Flayer transformation, but a morally justifiable one. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to outcomes benefiting everyone.
