Bungie is finally set to unveil more of its upcoming PvP extraction shooter, Marathon, with a brand-new gameplay livestream scheduled for this Saturday, April 12 (or April 13, depending on your time zone).
Last week, the Destiny developer posted a cryptic tweet featuring an unusual 15-second video that quickly spurred fans into detective mode as part of an "extensive alternate reality game."
Players identified that the ASCII art contained "a brief clip from the original trailer," and upon closer inspection, they "spotted the runner dashing down a corridor from that trailer."
Another fan chimed in: "WHEN WILL HE RETURN ERROR ERROR ERROR HAS OCCURRED THE ENEMY RETURNED SYSTEM WARNING: PROTOCOL BREACH EVACUATE THE BASE IMMEDIATELY ALL UNITS REPORT TO STATION INITIATE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 7 DATA LOSS IMMINENT GOOD LUCK, COMMANDER."
"Thousands of community members worldwide collaborated to unlock the gameplay reveal date for Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon," Bungie stated, announcing that this weekend’s livestream will begin at 10 am PDT (San Francisco) / 1 pm EDT (New York) / 6 pm BST (London) / 7 pm CEST (Berlin/Paris) / 9 pm GST (Dubai), or on Sunday, April 13 at 2 am JST (Tokyo) / 3 am AEST (Sydney) / 5 am NZST (Auckland).
Marathon was first announced in May 2023 as a revival of Bungie's classic series, while retaining its signature themes of "mystery, eeriness, and psychological tension." Set on the enigmatic planet Tau Ceti IV, Marathon lets players take on the role of Runners—cybernetic mercenaries engineered to endure the planet’s harsh conditions. As they explore the abandoned colony that once thrived on the surface, players will hunt for valuable loot, including new weapons and equipment.
Since the initial reveal, though, details have been scarce. A development update video released in October offered a glimpse into Marathon's gameplay mechanics, but the studio emphasized that the game was still in early development.
More recently, following the sudden cancellation of the live-service shooter Concord, Sony is reevaluating its focus on live-service games. In November 2023, Sony president Hiroki Totoki shared that the company planned to launch only six of the 12 live-service titles in development by March 2026, a shift that also led to the cancellation of The Last of Us multiplayer project.
Bungie itself has faced its share of challenges. The studio cut 220 jobs—roughly 17% of its workforce—in July 2024, less than a year after laying off 100 other employees. Just weeks later, reports emerged that former Marathon director Chris Barrett was reportedly dismissed following an internal misconduct investigation at Bungie. Barrett later filed a $200 million lawsuit against Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bungie.
To catch the Marathon reveal live, tune in to the official Marathon Twitch channel on April 12.
