Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Fighting Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting challenge. In my experience, it took over an hour to finally conquer this legendary warrior. Despite the difficulty, there are compelling reasons to face him.
Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights. Overcoming such a tough opponent is a badge of honor among gamers. Secondly, in certain scenarios, you might not have a choice. If you align with Shu or Wei, you'll inevitably face Lu Bu during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Moreover, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game, providing strong incentives to challenge him.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure your equipment is optimized for the battle. A weapon like a sword, capable of multiple hits and staggering him, is crucial. Equip Battle Arts that are quick to activate, don't require much Bravery, and have a broad range. In my fight, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Additionally, accessories that boost health and defense, such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are essential as Lu Bu's attacks can rapidly deplete your health. Opt for a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be key to maintaining your Bravery throughout the fight.
In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Lu Bu typically starts the battle mounted on his horse, Red Hare. During this phase, he will charge around the battlefield. Although he's swift, he does pause occasionally to rest. Seize these moments to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's aerial slam, making them relatively easy to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle commences.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase
On foot, Lu Bu is a formidable opponent. His attacks are swift and he moves quickly across the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura that makes him immune to staggering. He frequently charges in sets of three, so be prepared to evade repeatedly. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely damage your health, but it's evadable like his other charges.
His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow. With minimal preparation time, he launches three massive arrows three times, capable of juggling and decimating your health. Equip a Battle Art like Absconding Slash to cancel this attack from a distance; close-range arts like Palm Strike will likely lead to instant death. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can be a lifesaver if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.
Fortunately, Lu Bu can be juggled during this phase. Hitting him consecutively will quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react better to his attacks and remember: evade, evade, evade.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently depleted, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. At this point, he can't be staggered and unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources – Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid strikes. If he performs his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here will finally allow you to defeat this seemingly invincible foe.
And that's how you defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
