DOOM: The Dark Ages is Out Now!
Biggest Launch in id Software’s History
DOOM: The Dark Ages has stormed onto the gaming scene last week, earning accolades and high praise from numerous review platforms. Bethesda proudly announced on their Twitter (now known as X) on May 21 that the game has surpassed 3 million players, marking the most significant launch in id Software’s storied history.
The milestone was reached seven times faster than their previous hit, DOOM: Eternal. However, it's worth noting that Superdata claimed in 2020 that DOOM: Eternal hit the 3 million player mark within just 10 days of release. These figures, however, were estimates, and Bethesda has not officially confirmed these numbers. When comparing the performance of these titles, it's essential to consider broader contexts. At the launch of DOOM: Eternal, Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, had not yet been acquired by Microsoft, meaning it was not available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.
Contrastingly, DOOM: The Dark Ages was available on PC Game Pass from day one, influencing its player statistics on Steam. According to SteamDB, DOOM: The Dark Ages achieved an all-time peak of 31,470 players, significantly less than DOOM: Eternal's launch peak of 104,891 players. Analyst firm Ampere estimates that 2 million players of DOOM: The Dark Ages are from Xbox.
Despite these numbers, the fanbase has warmly received DOOM: The Dark Ages, viewing it as one of the standout entries in the franchise. Here at Game8, we awarded DOOM: The Dark Ages an impressive score of 88 out of 100. We praised its brutal renaissance of the DOOM series, shifting from the aerial flair of DOOM (2016) and Eternal to a more grounded, gritty combat experience.
