"Elder Scrolls Online Finally Adds Subclasses After 11 Years"

By BellaMay 14,2025

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a feature that fans have been clamoring for over the past 11 years—subclasses. This exciting addition allows players to customize their characters more deeply, enhancing the overall gameplay experience. As ESO celebrates its 10th Anniversary, let's dive into what this means for the game and what future updates have in store.

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

During the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10, Zenimax Online Studios announced the long-awaited subclass system. For years, players have expressed frustration over the need to start from scratch whenever a new skill tree was introduced. The new subclass feature addresses this by allowing players to mix and match skill lines without rerolling their characters.

To unlock this feature, players must reach level 50. Once achieved, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any of the six available classes. This flexibility results in over 3000 unique combinations, enabling players to craft their ideal playstyle.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new system, stating that despite potential increases in Power Levels, the team is "fine with where it is" after extensive testing.

Seasons of the Worm Cult

Moving forward, Zenimax Online Studios is adopting a seasonal content model. Studio Director Matt Firor explained that this approach will allow for more experimental content and better address player feedback. "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do," Firor said, emphasizing a new cadence that will broaden the focus and increase variety.

The upcoming chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," continues the saga from the game's original Molag Bal storyline. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone, investigating the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while the current season will span most of the year, future seasons will last 3 to 6 months. Additionally, Zenimax plans to revisit previous storylines with "remix" seasons, teasing a Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
