Enchantments and Forging Enhance Stardew Valley Gameplay

By ZoeJan 22,2025

This guide explores the Volcano Forge in Stardew Valley, detailing how to enhance tools and weapons with magical enchantments. The 1.6 update expanded these features, adding innate weapon enchantments and the ability to enchant the pan.

Obtaining Cinder Shards:

Cinder Shard Node

The Volcano Forge requires Cinder Shards. These pink-orange crystals are obtained by:

  • Mining Cinder Shard nodes (pictured above) in the Volcano Dungeon.
  • Harvesting from enemies (Magma Sprite, Magma Duggy, Magma Sparker, False Magma Cap) within the dungeon. Drop rates vary.
  • Obtaining them as a byproduct from fishing ponds containing seven or more Stingrays (7-9% daily chance).

Cinder Shards, unlike gemstones, cannot be duplicated in a Crystalarium.

The Mini-Forge:

After achieving Combat Mastery, craft a Mini-Forge (pictured below) to replicate the Volcano Forge's functionality anywhere on your farm.

Mini-Forge Components Requires: 5 Dragon Teeth, 10 Iron Bars, 10 Gold Bars, 5 Iridium Bars.

Weapon Forging:

Weapon Forging

Gemstones enhance weapons via forging (up to three times per weapon). Each forge level increases costs (10, 15, then 20 Cinder Shards) and the enhancement's potency. Gems provide different stat boosts:

  • Amethyst: +1 knockback per forge level.
  • Aquamarine: +4.6% critical hit chance per level.
  • Emerald: +2/+3/+2 weapon speed per level (stacks).
  • Jade: +10% critical hit damage per level.
  • Ruby: +10% damage per level (to min/max).
  • Topaz: +1 defense per level.
  • Diamond: Three random upgrades (costs 10 Cinder Shards).

Unforging (using the red X) removes upgrades, recovering some shards but not the gemstone.

Optimal Weapon Upgrades:

For maximizing damage, combine Emerald (speed) and Ruby (damage) with Aquamarine or Jade (critical hits). For survivability (e.g., Qi Challenges), prioritize Topaz (defense) and Amethyst (knockback).

Infinity Weapons:

Infinity Weapon Upgrade

Upgrade Galaxy Sword, Dagger, or Hammer into Infinity versions using three Galaxy Souls (20 Cinder Shards each). Forged upgrades and enchantments are retained. Galaxy Souls are acquired through various challenging methods (detailed in a separate guide).

Enchantments:

Enchantment

Enchantments add special effects to tools/weapons (requires Prismatic Shard and 20 Cinder Shards). Effects are random but repeatable.

Weapon Enchantments:

  • Artful: Halved special move cooldown.
  • Bug Killer: Double damage to bugs, kills Armored Bugs.
  • Crusader: Double damage to undead, permanently kills mummies.
  • Vampiric: Chance to regain health on kills.
  • Haymaker: Double fiber/hay chance from weeds.

Bug Killer and Crusader are generally most valuable.

Innate Weapon Enchantments:

Using a Dragon Tooth adds one enchantment from each of two sets: One set guarantees increased damage, critical power, attack, or speed; the second set may add slime gathering, defense, or reduced weight.

Tool Enchantments: Twelve enchantments exist, each tool-specific (see table in original text for details). Examples include: Bottomless Watering Can, Efficient tools (no energy drain), Preserving Fishing Rod (reduced bait/tackle consumption), etc.

Best Tool Enchantments (Summary):

  • Axe: Shaving (increased wood/resources), Swift, or Efficient.
  • Watering Can: Bottomless.
  • Hoe: Generous (more items), Archeologist (artifacts), Reaching, or Efficient.
  • Pickaxe: Swift or Powerful.
  • Fishing Rod: Preserving.
  • Pan: Generous or Reaching.

This comprehensive guide covers all aspects of the Volcano Forge, empowering players to optimize their tools and weapons in Stardew Valley.
