As anticipation builds for Grand Theft Auto 6 following the 2023 debut trailer, a former Rockstar developer suggests no further trailers are needed before the game's launch.
Rockstar’s GTA 6 Trailer 1 broke viewership records in December 2023, yet no new content has followed. The prolonged silence has sparked wild fan theories about the timing of GTA 6 Trailer 2.
Speculation ranges from counting holes in Lucia’s cell door net to analyzing bullet holes in the car from Trailer 1 and even vehicle license plates. The most prominent theory, the GTA 6 moon watch, accurately predicted the announcement date for Trailer 1 but has been dismissed as a clue for Trailer 2’s release.
When will GTA 6 Trailer 2 drop? Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted that fans might wait until closer to the game’s fall 2025 release for the next glimpse of the highly awaited title.
Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games technical director who worked on Grand Theft Auto 4 until 2008, believes additional trailers are unnecessary.
“If it were my decision, I’d skip more trailers,” Vermeij tweeted. “The hype for VI is already massive, and keeping surprises will make the launch even bigger.”
When a fan asked if Rockstar might only announce the GTA 6 release date, Vermeij called it “a bold move.”
Could Rockstar take that approach? Naming the first trailer GTA 6 Trailer 1 implies more will follow, but plans can shift. Rockstar may prioritize finalizing GTA 6 for its 2025 release over producing another heavily scrutinized trailer.
Vermeij noted that Rockstar delayed GTA 4 in July 2007, just months before its planned October release, and suggested GTA 6’s “decision day” will follow a similar timeline.
“We realized we’d miss the deadline only then,” Vermeij said. “I expect VI’s decision day will be comparable. Hoping for clarity in Take-Two’s August earnings report.”

In a March Bloomberg interview, Zelnick was asked why GTA 6’s release date remains tightly guarded.
“The excitement for this game is unmatched in entertainment,” Zelnick said. “I’ve worked across every entertainment sector, and this level of anticipation is unique.
“We aim to sustain that excitement. Unlike competitors who share schedules years ahead, we release marketing closer to launch to balance hype with expectation. It’s not always perfect, but that’s our goal.”
Mike York, a former Rockstar New England animator who contributed to Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 until 2017, said on his YouTube channel that Rockstar is intentionally fueling fan theories by staying silent about GTA 6 and Trailer 2’s release.
“Fans are crafting intricate theories to predict the next trailer,” York said.
“Rockstar’s secrecy is deliberate. It builds mystery and keeps people talking without them lifting a finger. The longer they stay quiet, the more fans speculate.”
York added that Rockstar is likely resisting fan pressure to reveal the GTA 6 Trailer 2 date to amplify this effect.
“They could easily announce the trailer date, but they don’t,” York said. “It’s a smart marketing tactic that sparks creative fan theories.
“These theories unite fans and generate buzz without new content, keeping the game in the spotlight during quiet periods.”
Zelnick’s comments suggest GTA 6 Trailer 2, if it exists, may not arrive until closer to the fall 2025 release, assuming no delays. Fans might wait longer for another look at the game.
