"Fincher and Pitt's Hollywood Sequel Heads to Netflix"

By LillianMay 13,2025

David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to reports from The Playlist, the dynamic duo behind Se7en is working to develop this unexpected project for Netflix, further strengthening Fincher's ongoing partnership with the streaming platform. If all goes as planned, the yet-to-be-titled sequel will see Brad Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman Cliff Booth.

The journey of this script to Fincher's hands is quite intriguing. It is an evolved version of what was initially known as The Movie Critic, a screenplay Tarantino had considered for his final film before it was shelved last year. Determined not to let the concept die, Tarantino has entrusted Fincher with the task of realizing his vision.

The Playlist reports that Netflix has acquired the screenplay for $20 million, with plans to allocate a $200 million budget and begin filming in California this July. While no other casting details have been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not be returning as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are fully committed to this project, setting aside all other engagements.

Deadline has also confirmed the development of the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, noting that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to share the script with Fincher, leading to this exciting new venture.

The upcoming sequel, potentially titled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2, faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor's high standards. The original film concluded with a definitive ending, yet its universe has been further explored in other media.

In 2021, Tarantino expanded the film's universe with a novelization that delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and sheds light on Cliff Booth's backstory, including the mystery surrounding his wife's death. This novel will likely gain additional significance once the sequel is released, though its exact role in the new film remains to be seen.
