Civilization 7 has launched, leaving longtime strategy fans with one burning question: Where's Gandhi?
The iconic Indian leader has appeared in every base Civilization game since the franchise debuted in 1991. His legendary status cemented by Civilization's infamous (though ultimately mythical) "Nuclear Gandhi" bug makes his absence particularly noticeable.

Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach offered reassuring words when pressed about Gandhi's omission: "I'd say we haven't forgotten anyone from previous games. There's understandable curiosity about missing civilizations like Great Britain."
(Carthage and Great Britain will join Civilization 7 through The Crossroads of the World DLC collection arriving March 2025, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal.)
"We have a long-term roadmap," Beach explained. "Some elements fit better later in that journey than at launch. Even major civilizations like Mongolia and Persia were absent from base versions of previous entries."
"With so many beloved civilizations," Beach continued, "we inevitably leave some out initially to introduce fresh options. But we're always evaluating when to reintroduce classic leaders."

Meanwhile, Firaxis faces Steam review challenges regarding UI concerns, map variety limitations, and absent features familiar to longtime fans.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these criticisms: "While acknowledging early feedback, we're confident Civilization veterans will appreciate the game's depth through continued play."
