Rockstar Games has officially announced the release date for GTA 6, but fans will need to wait until 2026. Dive into the details of this decision and its impact on the gaming industry's release schedules.

GTA 6 Release Date Announced

Coming on May 26, 2026

Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has been one of the most eagerly awaited titles in gaming, with fans eagerly anticipating its release since the first trailer was released. After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games finally unveiled the release date, which has shifted from what was initially expected.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on May 2, Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on May 26, 2026. This news comes as a surprise, especially after Take-Two Interactive, its publisher, expressed confidence during their Q3 2025 earnings call that the game would hit the market in Fall 2025.

Rockstar Games issued an apology for the delay, expressing gratitude for the fans' patience and emphasizing the need for additional time to meet their high standards of quality. They stated, "We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve." More details are expected to be shared in the near future.

Take-Two Interactive Fully Supports Rockstar Games’ Decision

Take-Two Interactive has expressed full support for Rockstar Games' decision to extend the development timeline for GTA 6. On May 2, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick shared his thoughts on the updated release schedule via a statement on their website.

Zelnick commented, "We fully support Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations."

This shift aligns with Take-Two's earlier statements about their titles potentially launching close to each other. Just last week, Gearbox Entertainment, another Take-Two subsidiary, announced that Borderlands 4 would launch two weeks earlier than initially planned. While many speculated that this move was influenced by GTA 6’s release window, Gearbox has denied any such influence.

Take-Two remains steadfast in their commitment to excellence, stating, "As we continue to release our phenomenal pipeline, we expect to deliver a multi-year period of growth in our business and enhanced value for our shareholders."

Devolver Digital Remains Adamant in Releasing a Game Same Day with GTA 6

The revised release date for GTA 6 has prompted an interesting move from Devolver Digital, the publisher behind Cult of the Lamb. Instead of moving away from the GTA 6 launch date, Devolver Digital decided to launch their own game on the same day, May 26. They announced this on X on May 2 with the bold statement, "You can’t escape us."

Back in March, Devolver Digital had already declared their intention to release a game on the same day and time as GTA 6. While they haven't revealed which game will go head-to-head with GTA 6, possibilities include follow-ups to popular titles like Cult of the Lamb, Enter the Gungeon, Hotline Miami, or even a brand-new IP.

Meanwhile, other developers and publishers are taking a different approach by planning to avoid GTA 6's release window. According to The Game Business Show in March, several anonymous game executives indicated their willingness to delay their games to steer clear of the GTA 6 launch.

Despite the delay, excitement for GTA 6 remains high among fans, eager to explore the next chapter in Rockstar Games' expansive open-world action-adventure series. Grand Theft Auto VI is now slated for release on May 26, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our related articles below!
