Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche find for PS Vita importers. Now, Gundam Breaker 4 boasts a simultaneous global release on Steam, Switch, PS4, and PS5 – a significant leap for Western fans. After 60 hours across various platforms, I can confidently say it's a fantastic game, though with a few minor caveats.

This release is monumental. No more importing Asia English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 offers dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (EFIGS and more), a stark contrast to the PlayStation-exclusive, Asia English release of Gundam Breaker 3.
The story, while serviceable, is not the game's main draw. Early dialogue can feel protracted, but the latter half delivers compelling character reveals and more engaging conversations. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though the significance of certain characters might be lost without prior series experience. I personally found myself enjoying the main characters, with my favorites appearing later in the narrative.

The true heart of Gundam Breaker 4 lies in its unparalleled Gunpla customization. Beyond adjusting individual parts, you can fine-tune ranged and melee weapons, and even alter part size and scale, allowing for truly unique creations. Builder parts add further layers of customization, some even granting unique skills. EX and OP skills, along with ability cartridges offering buffs and debuffs, add strategic depth to combat.

Missions reward parts, materials for upgrading, and materials to increase part rarity, unlocking more skills and allowing for strategic part cannibalization. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on standard difficulty, but three higher difficulties unlock later, significantly increasing the challenge. Optional quests, especially survival mode, offer additional fun and rewards.

Beyond combat, extensive paint, decal, and weathering options cater to Gunpla enthusiasts. The gameplay itself is incredibly satisfying. Combat remains engaging even on normal difficulty, with varied weapons and skills providing a consistently fresh experience. Boss fights, with their dramatic entrances and weak point targeting, are a highlight. While I encountered one particularly challenging boss fight, a simple weapon change resolved the issue.

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Environments can feel somewhat sparse early on, but the Gunpla models and animations are exceptionally well-done. The art style isn't realistic, but it's effective and performs well on lower-end hardware. The music is a letdown, lacking memorable tracks and the inclusion of anime soundtracks seen in previous installments. However, the voice acting, in both English and Japanese, is surprisingly excellent.

Minor issues include a repetitive mission type and a few bugs (one seemingly Steam Deck-specific). Online multiplayer functionality was tested on PS5 and Switch pre-release, but PC server testing is pending.

My personal project of building an MG 78-2 Version 3.0 alongside playing the game unfortunately stalled, but I plan to complete it soon. This experience provided a new appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in Gunpla creation.

Platform Differences:
- PC: Supports over 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller options. Runs flawlessly on Steam Deck.
- PS5: Capped at 60fps, looks amazing, excellent rumble and Activity Card support.
- Switch: Runs around 30fps, with downgraded visuals and sluggish assembly/diorama modes.

DLC: The Deluxe and Ultimate Editions offer early unlocks and diorama content, but aren't game-changing.

Final Verdict: Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular entry in the series. While the story is decent, the customization, engaging combat, and extensive Gunpla building are what truly shine. The PC version, especially on Steam Deck, offers a superb experience. The Switch version is playable but suffers from performance issues. The PS5 version is visually stunning but capped at 60fps. Overall, a highly recommended game for Gunpla fans and action game enthusiasts alike.
