Hitman: World of Assassination Surpasses Milestone in Player Numbers

Summary

  • Hitman: World of Assassination has surpassed 75 million players.
  • This impressive figure includes players who downloaded the game's Free Starter Pack, as well as those who played World of Assassination via Xbox Game Pass during the two years it was available on the service.

Hitman: World of Assassination has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing 75 million players, as announced by IO Interactive. This makes it likely the most successful game to date from the Danish studio.

It's important to note that World of Assassination is not a single game but a collection of the latest three Hitman titles. Two years after the release of the third game in the new trilogy, IO Interactive decided to merge these games into one comprehensive package. This bundle, which can still be purchased in parts, was relaunched for PC and consoles in January 2023 and later became available on the Meta Quest 3 in September 2024.

On January 10, IO Interactive shared on Twitter that Hitman: World of Assassination had reached 75 million lifetime players, describing this as a "monumental" achievement. The studio also stated that its business is currently "more solid than ever." While specific details about this milestone were not provided, it's believed that Hitman 3 significantly contributed to the total player count. Sales data suggests that Hitman 3 performed better than its predecessor in key markets like the UK, and it also recovered its development costs more quickly than the 2016 Hitman did.

Hitman's Latest Player Milestone Is Likely Driven by Xbox Game Pass and Free Starter Pack

The 75-million-player milestone was likely driven by the availability of Hitman: World of Assassination on Xbox Game Pass for two years, ending in January 2024. An even more significant factor was the Free Starter Pack, which IO Interactive has offered since the game's initial release in 2021. Additionally, the first two entries in the trilogy benefited from free demos, which helped expand their reach.

Despite Massive Success, the Hitman Series Is Currently on a Kind Of Hiatus

Despite its ongoing success, Hitman: World of Assassination continues to receive regular content updates, including Elusive Targets. However, these minor content drops appear to be the extent of IO Interactive's current focus on the franchise.

Currently, IO Interactive is not developing another Hitman game but is instead working on two new projects. One is Project 007, a game based on the James Bond IP that has been in development since 2020. The other is Project Fantasy, a new IP announced in 2023, which aims to explore a fantastical setting and push IOI beyond its traditional boundaries.
