"Joe Russo: AI Enhances Creativity in 'The Electric State'"

By MilaJun 01,2025

Since its release on Friday, the Russo Brothers' latest Netflix film, The Electric State, has been generating buzz across the board. Amidst the current landscape of the entertainment industry, one of the most talked-about aspects of the movie is its utilization of artificial intelligence (AI).

In an interview with The Times, Joe Russo, who co-directed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame alongside his brother Anthony, defended the use of AI for voice modulation in The Electric State. He described it as a task even a 10-year-old could accomplish after watching a TikTok video. "There’s a lot of finger-pointing and hyperbole because people are afraid," Russo stated. "They don’t understand. But ultimately, you'll see AI used more significantly."

Russo expressed optimism about the future of AI, emphasizing its creative potential. "AI is in its generative state now, where it has, as we call them, 'hallucinations.' You can’t do mission-critical work with something that hallucinates," he explained. "That’s why self-driving cars haven’t taken over, and AI surgery isn’t happening worldwide. But in its generative state, AI is best suited towards creativity."

While many artists view AI as the opposite of creativity, some studios seem eager to embrace the technology. In July 2024, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos claimed that audiences don’t mind whether AI is used in their favorite shows and movies. He argued that AI provides creators with tools to enhance storytelling. "Animation didn't get cheaper, it got better in the move from hand-drawn to CG animation, and more people work in animation today than ever in history," Sarandos noted. "So I’m pretty sure there's a better business and a bigger business in making content 10% better than there is in making it 50% cheaper."

Not everyone shares this enthusiasm for AI. Recently, Marvel denied accusations of using AI to design teaser posters for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, despite one image featuring a character with a four-fingered hand.

Directed and produced by the Russo Brothers from a script by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, The Electric State is based on Simon Stalenhag’s 2018 illustrated novel. The star-studded cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Woody Harrelson, Jason Alexander, Anthony Mackie, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, Brian Cox, and Stanley Tucci. IGN’s review scored the film 4 out of 10, describing it as a $300-million "anti-event movie."

Meanwhile, the Russo Brothers are set to helm the next two Avengers films for Marvel Studios: Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
