Keanu Reeves has recently provided the most exciting update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic, "Constantine." The actor, who portrayed the iconic occult detective John Constantine, confirmed that a script for "Constantine 2" is in the works. John Constantine, a character from DC Comics, was brought to life by Reeves following his success with "The Matrix." The original film has garnered a dedicated fanbase over the past two decades, with many calling for a sequel, a sentiment that Reeves has echoed, expressing his desire to revisit the role.
In a significant development, Reeves revealed to Inverse that they have recently pitched a story to DC Studios, which received a positive response. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay,'" Reeves shared. "So, we're going to try and write a script." This marks a crucial step forward for "Constantine 2," although it's important to note that there's no guarantee the project will be greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The sequel is not yet confirmed as part of the rebooted DCU, and has not been mentioned by Gunn or Safran as a potential project.
Despite the uncertainty, Reeves hinted that if "Constantine 2" does come to fruition, it will be set in the same universe as the original film. He playfully added that John Constantine would face even more torment in the sequel. This update follows comments from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who, in an interview with ComicBook in September, mentioned that a script for "Constantine 2" was already in his inbox. However, he admitted to being hesitant to read it due to his high hopes for its quality. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," di Bonaventura said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
