LEGO, the renowned toy manufacturer, is venturing into the world of video games, signaling a bold expansion into the digital realm. Under the leadership of CEO Niels Christiansen, the company aims to develop games independently while also collaborating with partners.
Christiansen expressed confidence in the LEGO brand, stating, "As long as we operate under the LEGO name, we are committed to creating experiences for children and adults alike across both digital and physical platforms." This marks a significant shift as the company actively explores internal game development.
It’s important to note that this move doesn’t indicate LEGO will abandon its licensing strategy entirely. Recent reports suggest TT Games, famous for its LEGO-themed titles, is currently working on a new project tied to a Warner Bros. franchise. Meanwhile, LEGO continues to collaborate with other studios, such as Epic Games, which introduced a popular LEGO-themed mode in Fortnite last year.
Over the past two decades, LEGO’s partnership with TT Games has been instrumental in producing beloved adventure games. Rumors circulate about an upcoming LEGO Harry Potter title, following the success of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Additionally, LEGO 2K Drive, a racing game released last year in collaboration with 2K Games, highlights the brand’s adaptability within the gaming industry.
