Margaret Qualley Joins Death Stranding Cast After Bizarre Perfume Ad Dance

By JulianMay 05,2025

Hideo Kojima has revealed that he cast Margaret Qualley for the role of Mama in Death Stranding after being inspired by her performance in a Spike Jonze-directed Kenzo fragrance advertisement. Sharing the viral commercial on Twitter on April 25, Kojima stated, "I saw this and offered her the role of Mama (Lockne) in Death Stranding."

The advertisement features Qualley dancing to a bass-heavy track reminiscent of Fatboy Slim's iconic "Weapon of Choice" video, which starred Christopher Walken. In the ad, Qualley performs a unique and captivating dance routine, complete with shaking, grimacing, and even firing lasers from her fingers, showcasing her ability to control and struggle with her movements simultaneously.

In Death Stranding, Qualley portrays Mama — Målingen — a key member of Bridges and one of the most innovative scientists in the United Cities of America. Alongside her twin sister Lockne, also played by Qualley, she is responsible for developing the Chiral Network, a crucial communications system for instantaneous data transfer.

Kojima's tweet about the advertisement sparked enthusiastic responses from fans. One fan praised him as a "visionary," while another humorously suggested they should be hired based on their own morning routines.

Currently, Kojima is busy with several projects, including Death Stranding 2, set to release on June 26, 2025, a live-action Death Stranding film in collaboration with A24, the Xbox-published game OD, which Kojima describes as a long-desired project, and an exclusive action espionage game for PlayStation.
